Welcome to the School of Languages and Literatures
Most South Africans are multilingual so are able to speak more than one language. English is not enough – not everyone speaks or wants to speak English only. In the contemporary world, languages mean business so being able to communicate in another language will make you more employable. Speaking more than one language increases your brain capacity. Learning a language helps improve your memory, creativity, listening skills and self-confidence.
At the School of Languages and Literatures, there are 11 language majors to choose from. For more information of the specific programmes on offer, please click on the Sections tab on this site.
On completion of undergraduate studies, students can advance to postgraduate specialisation from Honours through to Doctoral levels. We hope that you will enjoy exploring the programmes and courses on offer from the school and we look forward to welcoming you as a student!
The School of Languages and Literatures is located on the 2nd floor of the Beattie Building and the 2nd floor of the AC Jordan Building, which are both on University Avenue (Upper Campus).
