Welcome to the School of Languages and Literatures
Most South Africans are multilingual so are able to speak more than one language. English is not enough – not everyone speaks or wants to speak English only. In the contemporary world, languages mean business so being able to communicate in another language will make you more employable. Speaking more than one language increases your brain capacity. Learning a language helps improve your memory, creativity, listening skills and self-confidence.
At the School of Languages and Literatures, there are 11 language majors to choose from. For more information of the specific undergraduate programmes on offer, please click on the Language Sections tab on this site.
On completion of undergraduate studies, students can advance to postgraduate specialisation from Honours through to Doctoral levels. For more information on the postgraduate programmes available, access the Postgraduate tab on this website. We hope that you will enjoy exploring the programmes and courses on offer from the school and we look forward to welcoming you as a student!
“Students who have studied languages have gone on to become language teachers, novelists, politicians, academics, translators, film consultants, actors and international relations specialists.”
