Research Interests: Alexander the Great; Greek, Roman and Byzantine history and historiography; Administrative, economic and medical history.

John obtained his first degree from Durham University (UK) and his doctoral degree from the University of Cape Town. His first teaching post was at the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (now the University of Zimbabwe) (1961-3); he then taught at the University of South Africa, and moved to the University of Cape Town in 1965. He served as the last Dean of the Faculty of Arts (before the amalgamation of faculties and departments), and then as the first Head of the School of Classical and Modern Languages. Currently Emeritus Professor and Honorary Research Associate, UCT.

Range of theses supervised or co-supervised includes the Sadducees, Creon, The Shepherd of Hermas, the plague, and the role of the traditional Mediterranean diet in the development of Minoan Crete.
