Course outline:

Advanced study of literary and theoretical texts from German 20th century literature. This module includes in-depth analysis of the major figures in German literature and their contextualisation  within the prevailing intellectual climate and the historical forces at work which shaped contemporary literary responses.

DP requirements: 80% attendance of classes, 100% fulfilment of assignments, examinations, orals.

Assessment: Coursework essays (40%), one research project of approximately 6,000 words (40%), one compulsory oral examination (20%).

 

 

SLL4065F       TOPICS IN GERMAN LITERATURE II

Course outline:

This module includes a survey and analysis of the most significant German 19th century texts, such as those by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller et al, illustrating how these texts led to  a flowering of a national consciousness during and after the Napoleonic period, embodying a re- evaluation of the 18th century Aufklärung.

Course outline:

This module examines German literature from an historical point of view. Essentially a survey module, it traces the evolution of German literature from the Middle Ages through to the role of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) on the literary output in German and on through to the Aufklärung, Sturm und Drang.

DP requirements: 80% attendance of classes, 100% fulfilment of assignments, examinations, orals.

SLL4067F/S       TOPICS IN GERMAN LITERATURE IV

Course outline:

Select genres of German literature will be examined from the 19th century including the Bildungsroman, Modernist texts from late 19th-century Germany and from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, emphasising Viennese Modernism. Literary responses to World War II from both the  former West and East (GDR) German perspectives are also included.
