Course outline:

The main aim of this course is to understand the transnational relations between Portugal, Brazil and Lusophone Africa in the past and in contemporary times. This course will approach the history of early Portuguese colonialism considering Luso-African-Brazilian relations, as well as the situation  of the Black diaspora in Brazil and the Luso-African countries liberation struggles in the 20th century. Selected historical, political and literary texts, visual images, film, music and multimedia will serve as a vehicle for a deeper understanding of the Portuguese, Brazilian and Luso-African societies.

DP requirements: At least 80% attendance at lectures and completion of all assignments.

Assessment: Two essays (40%) and one essay of at least 4,000 words (60%).

 

 

SLL4301S    TOPICS IN PORTUGUESE II

Course outline:

The main aim of this course is to provide an understanding of the philosophical, theoretical and ethical assumptions underpinning the work of a language instructor, as well as the competence to deliver courses of Portuguese as a Foreign Language in different settings and for specific purposes. The course will explore the role of textbooks, proficiency exams and information  and communication technologies in the development of language teaching activities and guide the students for the appropriate design of syllabus, tasks and materials and the assessment and  evaluation of classroom practices.

DP requirements: At least 80% attendance at lectures and completion of all assignments. Assessment: Analysis of textbook (25%); teaching observation report (25%); pedagogical activity design (50%).

 

 

SLL4302F    TOPICS IN PORTUGUESE III

Course entry requirements: Acceptance for an honours programme and permission of the Head of Section.

Course outline:

The main objective of this course is to provide an understanding of the philosophical, theoretical and technical knowledge necessary for the professional provision of accurate and ethical cross-cultural linguistic services in translation and interpretation between Portuguese and English. This course explores the contrasting difference between these languages with a special focus on the development of skills for translation and interpretation in different social fields, as well as the role and the application of different computational translation tools used in the area.

DP requirements: At least 80% attendance at lectures and completion of all assignments.

Assessment: One essay of at least 2,000 words (20%) and two practical translation activities (80%).

 

 

SLL4303S    TOPICS IN PORTUGUESE IV

Course entry requirements: Acceptance for an honours programme and permission of the Head of Section.

Course outline:

This course intends to analyse the history of the emergence of Portuguese language in Europe and its process of spread around the globe. It explores the emergence of creoles and varieties of Portuguese along the history language and educational policies in the different Portuguese-speaking countries and the dynamics of language shift and maintenance in the Portuguese-speaking diasporas through the lenses of contemporary sociolinguistic theories. Selected bibliographical sources will be the vehicle to develop an understanding of the emergence of Portuguese as a global language.

DP requirements: At least 80% attendance at lectures and completion of all assignments.

Assessment: One oral seminar (25%) and one research essay of 4,000 words (75%).
