Classical Studies at the University of Cape Town encompass a wide range of courses in ancient cultural studies and languages. The courses offered by the section fall into two main categories: Greek and Latin Language courses and Classical Culture courses. The languages classes begin with an intensive first year course for those who have never studied the language before. Students who have already matriculated in Greek or Latin will begin either in second semester or at second year level. The Classical Culture courses focus primarily on the ancient Mediterranean world, especially Greek and Roman History, Mythology, Literature, and Thought. These courses include study of North Africa and the Ancient Near East, and require no knowledge of Greek or Latin. The section also offers an introduction to Etymology (Word Power).
